Lessons List

Preparation 1 - Constructing the Battery Holders Students will assemble two battery holders. The battery holders will be used to hold batteries and as a support base for later experiments in the kit.

Preparation 2 - Constructing the sliding switch Students will assemble the sliding switch. The switch will be used in later experiments in the kit.

Preparation 3 - Making connecting wires Students will make wires for connecting parts of the kit together. These connecting wire will be used in later experiments.

Preparation 4 - Making the plastic foam cutter Students will make the plastic foam cutter to be used in a later experiment

Preparation 5 - Winding the coils Students will wind wire around the bobbins to make electromagnets to be used in later experiments

Preparation 6 - The Electromagnet Stand Students will make the stand to hold the electromagnets.

Experiment 1 - Core versus No Core Purpose - Student will compare the strength of an electromagnet and whether or not the coil has a core.

Experiment 2 - Comparing Electromagnetic strength versus number of coils Purpose - Students will compare the strength of electromagnets with the number of winds in the coil.

Experiment 3 - Electromagnets in Series Purpose - Students will compare the strength of electromagnets when both are on at the same time with the same voltage and current.

Experiment 4 - Comparing Electromagnet Strength Versus Number of Batteries Purpose - Students will determine how the strength of electromagnets is related to the number of batteries

Experiment 5 - The Plastic Foam Cutter Purpose - Students will observe electrical energy converted into heat energy

Experiment 6 - Optional Activity - How Does The Number of Batteries Effect the Current in an Electromagnet? Purpose - Students will measure the current flowing through the circuit and compare it to the number of batteries.

Experiment 7 - Optional Activity - How Electromagnets Effect a Magnetic Compass Needle? Purpose - Students will observe how electromagnets effect a magnetic compass needle.

Experiment 8 - Optional Activity - How Do Different Cores Effect Electromagnet Strength? Purpose - Students will observe how different core materials effect the strength of electromagnets.
